Multi-Hyphenates, Thai Food in TX & Crushing on Rosalía
Some of us wear a lot of hats - and not just because we’re creative. Maybe you’ve built multiple offers, wear different titles depending on the room, or have more than one income stream (or idea for one).
So when someone asks, “What do you do?” - your brain might short-circuit a little.
If you’ve ever panicked mid-intro, given an overly vague answer, or trailed off into “It’s kind of hard to explain…” - this one’s for you.
Here’s how to talk about what you do - even when you do a lot.
🎯 Start with who you help, not your job title.
Instead of rattling off roles (“I’m a copywriter, brand strategist, and workshop facilitator”), try a simple, people-first line:
→ “I help small businesses tell their story in a way that drives sales.”
→ “I work with emerging fashion brands to scale their operations and team.”
→ “I help women get paid more by negotiating their salaries and consulting on compensation strategy.”
This keeps the door open for deeper conversation — and helps people understand your impact, not just your title.
🧰 Organize your work by offer or outcome.
Instead of cramming everything into one sentence, give people a peek into the categories of your work:
→ “I do 3 things: brand messaging, voice-of-customer research, and content strategy for launches.”
→ “I have a product line, but I also run a consulting studio for product-based business owners.”
→ “Most of my work lives at the intersection of wellness, design, and education.”
You don’t need to shrink to fit. You just need to give people a mental map.
🧠 Know your context — and lead accordingly.
You don’t have to say the same thing every time. Talking to a corporate client? Lead with the strategy work. Talking to a founder friend? Mention the creative project you’re excited about. Talking to a mentor? Share the vision you’re building toward.
You’re not being inconsistent — you’re being strategic. Multi-hyphenates don’t need one-liners. They need language that flexes with them.
Here’s to clarity without compromise.

Things We Loved This Week
Laura’s Things
🧑🏫 I binged watched this show while I was sick last week and it is delightful (and moderately raunchy).
😂 Unsurprisingly, this conversation between Amy Pohler and Kate McKinnon is v funny.
🍵 Lily Allen is spilling all the tea in her break up album.
🤯 And I can’t wait for Rosalía’s new album where she sings in 13 languages - this podcast made me develop a slight crush on her.
Lauren’s Things
🌶️ I had another rough stint in TX, but this genuinely spicy and delicious Thai restaurant in Houston was a bright spot.
☮️ I - like many others - have been thinking a lot about the radical '60's and 70's lately, which has me revisiting this 10 ep podcast about the children of the Weather Underground.
💡 It was a corporate team-building activity.
🍟 Carrie, where are you going in that beret?
